Last Week:

Civil War Frontline #10 - I'll be glad when this series is over. I still don't know why I've kept buying it. And the Penance thing was lame. 1992 called, they want you back.

Civil War #6 - I'll be glad when this one is over also. Despite so many negative remarks towards it, I thought it could be very cool. It jumps around to fucking much and assumes you've read everythig with "Civil War" on the cover.

Punisher War Journal #2 - Basically expands on Civil War #6, but if you've read CW6 then the end isn't really "to be continued" as to what happens to Frank.

All-Star Superman #6 - Another boring issue. I keep reading hoping I'll see what everyone else seems to love about it. I'm still waiting.
At least this one had Krypto.

(Damn, I'm starting to sound like whatshisname at the other site.)

X23: Target X #2 - I read and enjoyed the first X23 mini, so I'm giving this one a shot. Picks up right where the first left off. I'm hoping it ends right where X23's story in NYX started.

Wolverine 50 and Civil War: The Return. I'm about 3 weeks behind on reading though, so the Captain Marvel book (which I've been eagerly anticipating) is going to have to wait until I'm more caught up.

Wolverine #50 - On my comic dealer's reccomendation. So-so. I'll finish this storyline and see if it holds me. Could have done without the back-up story and saved me a buck.

Criminal #4 - More graet crime-noir from Brubaker and Phillips.

Star Wars: Dark Times #2 - With my dwindling interest in SW, I really need to re-evaluate my SW purchases. Great art, so-so story (which actually started back near the end of Republic).

Punisher: War Journal #3 - Great bit of pre-'Nam history between Frank and Captain America, which Cap probably doesn't even remember. I almost had a 'holy shit' moment when Frank attacked Rhino. I knew Marvel didn't have the balls to let Frank kill an almost A-list baddie.

I also had to go out and buy Amazing 536, which my dealer had somehow skipped over. In an all-world pain in the ass moment, I actually read 537 - then realized I didn't have 536 when I went to file it. I could tell I'd missed something, and it turned out to be a whole key issue. Fuck sakes.

Anyhow, I went back and caught up on Civil War (read Iron Man, Cap vs Iron Man, the Kingpin 1 shot, Civil War 6, Frontline 9&10, FF 541, Avengers 26, Cap 24, etc, etc, etc). Surprise - ******* is going to be a real bad guy at the end, not just someone people don't see eye to eye with.

I'm looking forward to the end of this now, I had a look at the Marvel site and realized that I've bought A LOT of comics that have had Civil War implications over the past few months..... I'm ready for something else.

Lessee, what did I buy last week?

Flash. Bilson and DeMeo finish up their run. ( ha ha, A Flash pun). Other than feeling the need to restart the series because Bart is now the Flash, there has been nothing spectacular about this series. What's up DC?

Moon Knight. Ugh. Talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk. What the fuck? Who the fuck are all these characters Huston is pulling out of Moon Knight obscurity? Start beating people's asses already!

Punisher War Journal. Y'know, after reading a Punisher MAX book for the last 4 years, this Frank Castle is a total wanker. Just sayin'...

Silent War. The art is so so, but the story is pretty good. I am, however, sick of writers tying all their storylines into parables of whats going on here and in the middle east. Enough already. And as a side note, can Hasbro please make with the BlackBolt Marvel Legend already?

Wolverine 50. Ummmm...yeah. If this was a movie, I would've fallen asleep. I expect SO much more from Jeph Loeb, especially when writing James "Logan" Howlett.

Transformers: Escalation 3. Well fuck me running, this was the best read of the week. Furman can even make hokey shit like Megatron turning into a handgun interesting. I expect this run of TF to go on forever. Simon Furman rules.

Civil War: The Return. I have a whole rant about this dog I'm dropping into the Marvel Topic. Suffice to say, if I was a Marvel supporter before, this one made me straddle the fence.

Teen Titans. Beginning the "Titans East" story where all the bad teenagers in the DCU fight all the good ones. Sadly, Geoff Johns is leaving after this story arc. That man is a damn fine Comic Writer.

Annhilation. Series end. Sets up a new status quo in the Marvel Cosmos. Annhilus is dead. His minion has the Skrull Empire and the Kree capital under his boot. Ronan the Accuser leads the rest of the Kree from their homeworld. Phyla, Captain Marvel's daughter is the new Quasar ( and apparently boning Moondragon? Huh?). Rich Rider debates whether to start a new Nova Corps. Thanos is now Death ( along with his woman..erm...Death). Silver Surfer is once again Galactus' Herald. This was a damn fine series. Check it out. or wait for the TPB, but read it either way.

Ghost Rider Finale. Nice. There's a story behind this book, and doing the cover up to look like GR 94 from the 90's was a nice touch. The story was also mid-90's however, so it wasn't great, but it wrapped up Dan Ketch's tale. I enjoyed it.

Daredevil. Awwwww...Matt and Foggy reunited. And one last confrontation between Matt and Wilson Fisk. I know, it won't last, but it was still a good closure. Now we can get back to the actual Daredeviling. Brubaker rocks!

X-Men. Y'know...this book is much more interesting when they follow the X-Men nobody has heard of like Lady Mastermind and Omega Sentinel. I still no likey Humberto Ramos' art so much, but it's better than bachalo's.

FF 542, The Return (2nd copy as my first one was in shitty shape).

Still need to go get Phoenix Warsong 5.

I also managed to get some back issues, including the long sought after Wolverine 157 from the first volume that I could never seem to find. The store I went to in Ottawa must have had 5 copies in stock! This allows me to go back and read about 30 issues of that run, so I'm looking forward to reading those and getting them filed away properly.

Vynnie, I also managed to find the last 4 issues of Spectacular Spidey v2 that I had missed finishing that run!

I also filled in my Daredevil gap, and need only issue 65 to have the 2nd volume filled in. It was a good trip, all in all!

Last week was only:
Daredevil #92 - Damn near everything goes back to normal. Foggy's back for some stupid reason. Leaving him "dead" for at least a little while could have made for better stories. Worst issue I've read so far.

This week:
Punisher #44 - The first six pages define Frank Castle and why he does what he does, IMO. Amazing writing by Ennis. Those pages alone could make one hell of a short story. The rest of the issue is pretty good also. The black guy featured in most of the rest of the issue looks like the artist based him on Sam Jackson.

Spider-man: Reign #3
- Great issue, but I'm still a little pissed at myself for reading this one (and #2) before I get #1. I have a feeling that things won't end well for anyone when this is over next month.
My only complaint: It reminds me too much of The Dark Knight Returns. The story, artwork, and even some of the little things feel a lot like it: The TV news always popping up; the return of old villains (even though that was kind of necessary); the kid with her own little story (even though Robin's was much shorter).

X23: Target X #3
- I think I'll have to re-read the first mini and then this one right after. I keep forgetting details and what happened and who and stuff. Beautiful artwork though.

My thoughts on yesterday's books.

GIJoe. So all this build-up with Colonel Rey being Serpentor and then he's NOT Serpentor? Man, that was a little disappointing. How infinitely cooler would it have been if he'd killed Duke and embraced the Snake? Everybody would have been talking about that for years. "Remember when Serpentor KILLED Duke?! Fucking AWESOME story." Now it's just boring and already forgotten.

N'Avengers. Now that this whole silly Civil War is not blindsiding and shanghai-ing the best book on the market, we can get back to good old fashioned ninja fighting, complete with banter. Rock! PS. Bendis, IF Echo is deaf, she can't read Ronin's lips through his mask. Busted.

Dark Tower 1. Well I didn't stand in line at midnight to get it, but I picked up a copy to see what all the hubbub was about. Damn decent. Jae Lee's art is grand, Isanove's paint is wonderful and story of the Gunslinger is classic.

FF The End. Penultimate issue with every Kree and Shi-Ar supervillain versus pretty much all the Avengers, Inhumans, and of course, the Fantastic Four. After reading Annihilation, it was quite humorous to see Thing dispatch Annihilus in about four pages. Step 1. Remove Cosmic Rod from chest. Step 2. It's Clobberin' Time

Hulk. End of Planet Hulk ends with Hulk getting hitched and a really gross scene between the Brood-chick-thing and Miek making out ( I think).

Punisher. Diabolical nailed it with his review. This book is so consistently hardcore that it's in my top five every month.

Supergirl. I bought this on a whim. Churchill gives good art and you can't go wrong with a Batgirl/Supergirl tussle. Especially when Batgirl is now bad. Good stuff.

Ultimate Spidey. Finishes the Clone Saga with the softy wrap up issue where everybody hugs and stuff.

Uncanny X-Men. Is it me or is this book...dragging? I just don't buy the motivation of Vulcan. He spends years and years and flies BILLIONS of miles through space with one goal: Kill the evil bastard that killed his mom. But then Deathbird sucks his dick and he's all "Hey! Let me be your son in law, evil mom killer!"

X-Men Annual. This book, however, was GREAT! It had fantastic Mark Brooks art and an old school story that featured everything from the return of Northstar and Aurora, to Exodus and some not often seen evil mutants like Random, Tempo, and Frenzy throwing down on the SHIELD helicarrier with Mystique, Cable, and Rogue. Good banter, easy to follow story, a few loose ends tied up and a nifty cliffhanger-esque ending that, if it were in a monthly book, you would want next month to hurry up and get here. I don't know if Mark Brooks can't hold down a monthly title or what the deal is, but Marvel is wasting this guy on Annuals and fill in stuff.

Phoenix: Warsong. Decent final issue. I'm glad they didn't kill off the Cukoos. Silvestri homages Greg Land on the cover, which I found extremely giggly, since people say Greg is a famous cribber of other people's art and Silvestri is like in the top five best artists working right now. i don't know if it was intentional or not, but it made me smile.

So, for Dark Tower: Is whoever's writing the comic going to complete throw out the shitty Book VII King wrote and give the tale a proper ending?

And is Negative Boy the only guy who likes GIJoe anymore? I dropped that like a case of crabs. Is not a case of Hama-love (though I will maintain until my dying day he's one of the best). It's a case of this story sounding like shit. And, after the "Red Shadows" that came out of nowhere to kill half the people and then faded away without a trace, Devil's Due had a lot of proving themselves to do. And they didn't. This is now, as NB likes to say "fan wank."

New writer and artist next issue, anarky. I guess DDP felt the same way and thought they needed a new direction. The problem is they are hamstrung by Hasbro and the popularity/longevity of the characters. Nobody is going to kill Duke, Stalker, Scarlett, etc without having fanboys ( most of whom aren't even reading anymore anyway) throwing hissy fits. Serpentor might have gained any respect I never had for him back if he woulda cold blooded put one in Duke's skull. BANG. All of the sudden, Serpentor's a threat and the Joes have a GREAT reason to go after him. but no, fucking sissy boys gotta go with the cop out ending.
