comics rock. talk about them here. now. or just go to the "corn" section and wack off. i'll understand. i'll just sit here and read my spider-man comics.
Rollo Tomassi wrote:Then I only need to locate those early B/W magazine appearances (which I've read in the Essential Punisher book and they fuckin' kick ass.) and mayhaps his super early appearances in ASM if I can afford them.
ASM #129 is my personal comic Holy Grail.
Those B?W mags were great. I also read 'em for the first time in the Essential Vol 1. What I never knew until I read that was the name Frank Castle wasn't revealed until the original Punisher mini-series - Over 10 years after his debut.

Last Saturday I went to a local 'Con' (just some dealers set up at the Ramada Inn) and dropped $125 for 320 books(more on that haul later). One of the dealers gave me his business card, and he looked familiar but I couldn't quite place him. Anyway, I stopped by his comicshop today. Its in a boonie township about 10 miles out of town so its a bit out of my way. And we figured out that we had both frequented the same comic shop 15 years ago. The one I eventually started working at. He had gotten tired of his dayjob and opened a comic/toy store about six months ago. So we chatted and caught up. We've both had kids since then and showed our pictures. It was very cool. I also dropped $20 after digging through his 50cent bins. Here's what I got.
An issue of Azrael, an issue of a FF miniseries, several issues Gen-X, an issue of Guardians of the Galaxy, Guy Gardner #1, the Rebirth of IronMan, an issue of JLA, a couple issues from a JLA/Titans xover, some issues of Legionnaires, an issue of Nightwatch(!), the final two issues of the Prowler miniseries I've been missing for 16 years, an issue of PeterParker, which brings to within 10 of finishing that one off, an issue of WonderWoman, a oneshot from 97 called Heroes and Legends, an X-Force annual, and Speed Demon!, the Amalgam one shot combining The Flash, GhostRider, and Etrigan. Too bizarre to pass on.

I tracked down almost the entire run on Anarky's "ongoing" series (it only lasted 8 issues and I already had issue . I'm missing issue 6. But seriously, for what it was, it was awesome. I want a Green Lantern Anarky action figure!!
I also found dirt cheap the first twelve issues of Batman and the Outsiders from way back in '83. Batman tells the JLA to go stuff themselves and just starts his own superteam. Batman iz kewl. But what I thought was really funny reading them, is that even though he doesn't admit he's Bruce Wayne to them, he sets the team up in Bruce Wayne's Penthouse and admits that Wayne funds Batman's activities. Then as Bruce Wayne, he buys a bookstore for Katana to run, gets Black Lightning a job as a teacher, and sets up living quarters for the team. This was all back in '83! Granted, they were all heroes, but considering the recent revelation in Morrison's books, its funny to think thats how far back the idea goes. Maybe Morrison didn't crib from me after all. He just cribbed from Mike Barr.

My Amazing Spidey run got another hole plugged yesterday, and it was a very satisfying ebay auction. Now, except for 4 issues, I have a complete run from 268 on. One of them is 434, which is part of the "Identity Crisis" crossover where Spider-Man posed as Prodigy, Dusk, Hornet, and Riccochet.
The others are 19, 25 (a silver foiled double sized issue) and 28 which has something to do with Mary Jane dying in a plane crash. The issue I won was issue 20, which was a 100 page Monster issue. I got it for $1.50, but that included 4 other issue I already had, including #1 of the relaunch. That same seller had a run of Adventures of Superman from the late 80s issues 440 thru 469, which I won for less than $10 and my run on that series is down to only 7 issues (When I say Adventures of Superman and Complete Run, I mean after the title changed from Superman).

I found issue 19 of ASM the other day. And last night I made a HUGE dent in my Punisher collection!! Punisher:Year One 1 thru 4, Punisher vs Daredevil, Punisher Summer Special 1 thru 4, Punisher vs DD:Childs Play, Assassin's Guild Graphic Novel (for .99 cents!!), as well as the Empty Quarter one shot. Oh, and the 68 page Classic Punisher B/W book with his early reprinted appearances.
Holy Shit, I'm so close I can taste it. I need Holiday Special 3, War Zone 5 , vs Bullseye 4, Franken-Castle 14 and 20, and the Kingdom Gone GN. Then I think there're a 5 ish Daredevil vs. from '05, and a 4 ish Wolverine vs. from '99 mini series. I have the other Wolverine minis.
And I'm looking at the few appearances he had prior to his first limited series.
Consider he wasn't much more than a thug villain at the beginning, and certainly not fleshed out as the Frank Castle we know today. 4 and 5 were the B/W Magazine sized books where we first get a glimpse of the "serious" Punisher Character. If you get a chance, read those stories. Its also interesting to note that he basically disappeared between Dec 77 and the Cap story in Jan 80. That Marvel Tales is a reprint of his 1st appearance. That's two years! Then again between Oct 83 and his first mini series in Jan 86. That WCA appearance wasn't much more than a cameo. That's another two years of absence! And I thought the character was more established by the time Frank Miller used him in his Daredevil series. And I'm farther ahead than I thought because I have some of those early appearances. I just didn't realize HOW early they were.
1)ASM 129 (Feb 74) Obviously a holy grail book. But surprisingly only $900 in Mint Condition according to Overstreet.
2)ASM 135 (July 74) Only $85 in Overstreet mint. Ebay has some lower grade auctions for as low as $3.00!
3)Giant Size Spider-Man 4 (April 75) This one goes for $200 in Overstreet. Again, ebay has some cheaper auctions if you're patient.
4)Marvel Preview 2 (July 75) Overstreet Mint $185, but ebay has them for around $50-60.
5)Marvel Super Action 1 (Jan 76) Overstreet Mint $125, ebay has several BIN for $15.
6A)ASM 161 (Oct 76) Overstreet Mint $48 for these two issues. ebay has some BiN for $6.99
6B)ASM 162 (Nov 76) I have this issue, but ebay has them for around $6.99
7)Power Man Annual 1 (76) ebay has several auctions for under $10, one as low as $3.99.
8)ASM 174 (Nov 77) Overstret Mint $32. ebay has a NM/M issue for under $5.
9)ASM 177 (Dec 77) overstreet Mint $35 (higher because of the Green Goblin) but there's an aution on ebay for 99 cents!
Marvel Tales 106 (Aug 79)
10)Captain America 241 (Jan 80) I have this issue. But Overstreet has it for $32 Mint, and ebay has several for under $10. One is $3.25
Marvel Tales 111 (Jan 80)
Marvel Tales 112 (Feb 80)
11A)ASM 201 (Feb 80) I have this issue, but these are $25 in Overstreet and under $10 on ebay. Some auctions are 99 cents.
11B)ASM 202 (Mar 80)
12)ASM Annual 15 (81) Overstreet Mint is $32. Patience will get it for you on ebay for $5 or less.
13A-D)Daredevil 181-184 (Apr-July 82) I have the first and last issues. 181 is the Death of Elektra issue, so that runs $50, but the others go for $25. And I found those issues in a $1 bin like two years ago.
14A)Spec Spidey 78 (May 83) Cameo. Goes for $6 Overstreet Mint.
14B)Spec Spidey 79 (June 83) Same for this one.
14C)Spec Spidey 81 (Aug 83) I have this issue.
14D)Spec Spidey 82 (Sept 83) I have this issue.
14E)Spec Spidey 83 (Oct 83) This one goes for $12 Overstreet Mint because it retells his origin. ebay BiN has it for $3.50
15)West Coast Avengers 3 (Dec 85). Have it. This isnt much more than a cameo and you can find it in quarter bins everywhere.
After that the Circle of Blood mini hit in Jan 86 and after that the ongoing. I don't know that I have EVERY appearance after those books started, but I'm sure I have 98% of them, and the ones I don't have aren't in demand like his early appearances so I can find them cheap at my leisure. So that's 14 early issues in addition to the 15 from above.

I got a bunch of random Punisher stuff from comiccollectorlive.com for pretty damn cheap, including the Hearts of Darkness One-Shot, What If? #10 and Punisher: G-Force all for a buck or less each.

Those early serious b/w stories are great. I read them for the first time in the Essential Punisher Volume 1. The thing I find really fascinating is that he wasn't given the name Frank Castle until the Circle of Blood mini-series - 12 years after his first appearance!
And as lame as it is, one of my favorite Punisher comics is the reprint of ASM #129 they gave away on the opening weekend of the 2004 movie. I guess I like it because it was kind of unexpected since the flick opened against one of the Kill Bills and wasn't expected to do well.
"As they say in China, 'Arrivederci'!"
*For the creation of the Golden Deuce Award.
I think I have a couple of those LionsGate Reprints from the movie. That's why I'm not really as stoked to get ASM 129 as I would if I found those BW mags for cheap. He's kind of a lame tool in his first appearance. No personality. Or at least not the personality he's famous for.
And I'm amazed at how well the Circle of Blood series holds up. And his early ongoing issues as well. Its funny that Remender and Fraction had so much problem "fitting him into" the regular Marvel U when those early books are in the 616 and work just fine. Actually some of my favorite Punisher comics are the old Punisher Armory books. Each issue was nothing but pages of actual weaponry and a little narrative anecdote in a caption block with each picture. They really got inside Frank's mindset. Marvel should do a TPB of those issues if they haven't yet.
"Say Jim! Whoo! That is a bad outfit! Whoooo!" -- Pimp, Superman The Movie "You're an idiot, Starscream." -- Megatron, Transformers:The Movie
Not that my Punisher collection is all but complete, I'm starting to look at other characters. I'm suprisingly close to having a full Moon Knight run. I'm only missing seven issues from his first series, then a total of seven issues from his various minis between 1984 and 2000. I have a full Marc Spector: Moon Knight run and full runs of his last two ongoings. I haven't done research into his actual earliest appearances in the Werewolf by Night series though.
Except for his first 81 issue series, I have almost all of the Ghost Rider books. There's a GR/Cable oneshot, a Wizard 1/2 issue, and the 'minus 1' Flashback issue. And the 2099 stuff, but other than that I have everything else.
I have the first issue of Jack Kirby's BlackPanther from the 70s, but not the rest of the series. And of course the early Jungle Action stuff. But aside from that stupid Deadpool cameo in issue 23 of the 2000 series, and issue 9 from the 2006 series, I have everything else. Even the Marvel Comics Presents run and the Panther's Prey prestige series.
I'm also focusing on all the Thor and Captain America Miniseries from the last decade or so. I've made a dent in them, but I think after the films come out there's gonna be a ridiculous markup on that shit. I can get them for a dollar now, or $20 three months from now.

GAAAAH. Gadammit. Just as I was about to bid on a complete Untold Tales of Spider-Man run on ebay, my computer froze up. And then my fucking blackberry stopped working at the exact same time! Some fucker picked the entire 29 issue run up for 9.99. I like finding complete runs of series because you don't have to hunt the entire thing down piecemiel. I did get the entire Peter David Captain Marvel series (all 60 issues) for $19 from the same seller, but that Spider-Man thing is gonna stick in my craw for a few days.

I was looking for a short lived Thing series by Dan Slott that came out in 2005ish. it was an ongoing that only lasted 8 issues. I was hoping I could find the entire run for cheap, but what I found instead was even better. A guy was selling almost an entire run of the original Marvel Two-in-One series, complete with all seven annuals. Two-in-One was basically like Marvel Team Up except it starred Ben Grimm instead of Spidey and ran for 100 issues between 1974 and 1983. All told it was only missing less than 20 issues of the series, so I bid on it and won. And I just won 7 more for 75 cents each, including the very first issue. Which leaves me with only 11 issues to track down. Wasn't even really looking this series, but couldn't pass it up. I'm hoping the 11 missing issues aren't like $50 bucks apiece or some stipid shit like that. And I'm still on the lookout for the Slott series too.
"Say Jim! Whoo! That is a bad outfit! Whoooo!" -- Pimp, Superman The Movie "You're an idiot, Starscream." -- Megatron, Transformers:The Movie
Holy shit. Marvel Two-In-One was one of the best books they published at the time. It's the only reason I could see anyone nominating Tom DeFalco for a "best writer of all time" list on CBR (though even then I can't see him cracking anyone's top ten). I used to find back issues of that for less than fifty cents all the time and never passed them up.
I do know there were a few issues that were very pricey, though. That's the nature of the team-up books. Thing and Ghost Rider would be in demand. Thing and Mordred the Mystic, not so much.
*--For behavior unbecoming anyone, perpetrated in real time over an extended--AH, FUCK IT! MORE MALIBU, BITCHES!!
Assuming I don't get hosed by the guy I bought issue 1 and other early issues from, I'm missing
43 Man-Thing (but Captain America is on the cover so that might be problematic)
44 Hercules
45 Captain Marvel
47 Yancy Street Gang (Hey! Quarter bins here I come!)
48 Jack of Hearts
49 Dr. Strange
53 Quasar (John Byrne did the art, so that might make it more)
74 A Very Special Christmas Issue...
90 Spider-Man
94 PowerMan/Iron First
95 The Living Mummy
That looks doable for a fairly cheap amount. That fact that most of them are later issues is a boon. The bulk set I bought was missing 1 and 8(Ghost Rider) but the other guy had them for 75 cents. Not in MINT condition obviously, but I'm more interested in them as reading material. As long as they don't look like a dog's chew toy, I'm very lenient on Bronze Age books I find.
