we saw 'the hunger games' yesterday. the missus, having read at least two of the three books (not sure if she read them all), was disappointed by the adaptation decay in that they glossed over a lot of points in the beginning, they really didn't convey the level of destitution present among the greater populace, and that the people of the capitol city weren't odd-looking and opulent enough. she said they also took things from the second book and placed them in the first movie, though after hearing a bit about it, i thought adding them into the first arc made some sense in the greater context.

having unfortunately seen all the twilight movies, i don't see the parallels between the two - the casting, acting and energy of THG are all at a much higher standard, and the story is much more gripping. it's been a long time since i saw 'the running man' but based on my memory of it i guess i can see some parallels there. this obviously has a lot less 80's cheese to it.

overall, it felt a bit rushed - even weighing in at 2hrs 22mins somehow. so much happened that it seemed to be over too quickly. cinematography-wise, the beginning was especially "shaky-cam documentaryesque". i swear, sometimes i think people will look back on the movies of the late 90's and 2000's and think only epileptics were accepted into film school. it calmed down a bit after that, which is counter-intuitive since the action took place later in the film, which is when the "shaky cam" stuff is generally used more effectively. they used it most effectively later to convey the brutality of the actual "games" without showing too much gore.

ultimately, i feel like i would have gotten more out of it had i already read the books. my main sticking point is that there wasn't much exposition on why they were called 'the hunger games' in the movie. i understand via my wife that they call them that because the winner's district is supplied with food, but they don't really say that in the movie - it's just "the hunger games" because that's what they call it. if they did explain it somewhere, i missed it. the missus said it wasn't that much more apparent in the book, but what references she said they did make made a lot more sense to me.

as for the greater scheme of things, the success of this movie can either be a positive or negative in terms of sci-fi. the missus was surprised to hear me call it that a sci-fi movie, but it is. dystopian future where peasants are kept under the boot heels of an opulent totalitarian regime? check. futuristic notions such as levitation, genetic engineering, and solid holographic projections? check. i don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that she didn't realize it was sci-fi. it could either mean that these types of sci-fi notions are becoming more generally accepted in mainstream media, or if it wil serve to make sci-fi dilute itself for better mainstream consumption.

Hunger Games just cracked the Top 50. Since it's Easter Weekend and it doesn't have any serious competition(Titanic in 3D?) I think it could crack the top 20 by the end of the weekend.

It'll beat Titanic, but I have a feeling Titanic might scoot up a position or two, given the inflated prices of 3D movies.

Titanic is #2 on the list behind Avatar. Unless it rakes in like $150 million or something, I think it's stuck where it is.

I haven't even paid attention to the rankings in forever--ticket prices are so damned high now that, even with dropping attendance, anything that's not a bomb is Top 100.

I can go to an awesome theater that's two towns over and costs $10 a ticket for 3D. Or I can go to the local, rather crappy, theater where the tickets range from $2.50 to $5 depending on the time, but the screen is small and the sound system outdated. And, either way I go, I sit through a ton of fucking commercials (not trailers--those don't bother me at all) and deal with morons and misbehaving kids that the underpaid high school-aged theater staff don't want to deal with.

Or I can wait about 3-6 months and get it for $15 on DVD and watch it at home on a setup that sucks at the moment but will be cool again when I replace the broken TV.

That movie was so unbelievable. People can't go to Mars by using the handheld devices wielded by alien "Therns."

Everyone who looks at the evidence knows that those devices are tuned to Thern thought waves.

Prometheus is the one for me this summer. Already figured out what it's all about and how it all ties in but none of that matters. it's the visuals I'm looking forward to. That and the fact they filmed it on real sets and it's not all lazy greenscreened crap.
Ridley Scott is already talking about a sequel but may not direct, though James Dickwad Cameron is champing at the bit to further fuck up and cheapen the work of Ridley Scott with a sloppy seconds outing. Ridley seems more interested in a Bladerunner prequel/sequel. I personally don't see the point. I'd rather someone made a fresh version of Do androids dream of electric sheep with the whole story rather than just a bad take on half of it like Ridley gave us. Ridley's visuals are gorgeous and stunning but his economising with plot and editorial cuts aren't always the best. the DC of Bladerunner is actually not a better movie than the studio fiddled with theatrical cut. all the DC changed was the omission of the voiceover and an abrupt ending.

As for the rest of the summer movies he said realising he was beginning to rant, Battleship looks like an amazing pig terd journey. Liam Neeson is death to movies. I had enough of metallic clad aliens with Battle LA and District 9 and the confusing melees of Transformers. Battleship looks completely soulless and from clips and trailers about as engaging as 2012 was.

Batman Spiderman and The Avengers will be worth a watch. I'm intrigued to see how the Batman arc will end, The new Spiderman Can only be an improvement after deathly dull Toby McGuire. And Superman isn't wearing any underpants.... I'll watch any Superman movie even if it's dire. Henry Cavill can't be as wooden as Brandon Routh right?

GI Joe. Hmmmm. Not sure I'm interested. The last one sucked. I kinda think it's better suited to animation rather than live action. Or maybe an RPG. I don't think you get a sense of who the guys are Unless you're a lifelong fan of Joe. And they seem to be taking it far too seriously. Which is stupid as the whole thing is just an advert for Hasbro. I'll give it a go eventually but I won't be going to the cinema to watch it.

Hunger games doesn't interest me in the slightest. I'll take Dark Shadows over that. Tim Burton has lost his edge but I just aint bothered about hungry people killing each other. Johnny Depp camping it up yet again is the lesser torture in my view.

John Carter I want to see. Don't know why but I feel the negative critiques I've seen are probably from people missing something. I saw the craptacular B movie version of Princess to Mars last year not knowing it was part of the John Carter series so I guess I want to see something a bit better. And even if it sucks Taylor Kitsch will shirtless is nice eye candy.

Total Recall. The remake people are squealing like indignant girls about. I want to see it. There's no Mars. And no latex Arnold S with eyes popping out to laugh at. It may take the subject matter seriously and Colin farrell is very watchable. A new take with better production values can only be a good thing.

Abe Lincoln Vampire hunter. Doesn't grab me. I guess Abe Lincoln just doesn't have the same resonance for me as he will for you guys. There again I'm not excited about anything that imbues real historical figures with fantastic attributes. I feel similarly about the upcoming movie involving Edgar Allen Poe in an out of character role. We have enough Superheroes without making real people into them.

And I completely missed the point of this thread but I don't care.
I have never read any of your posts, but from what I can learn I should say that for people who like the kind of posts you deliver, they are just the kind of posts such people like.

How poorly did John Carter do? Check this out.

Rich Ross, who had enjoyed great success running Disney's cable channels but struggled in the top post at the film studio, has resigned.
"I no longer believe the chairman role is the right professional fit for me," Ross said in a statement released by Disney on Friday. "For that reason, I have made the very difficult decision to step down as chairman of the Walt Disney Studios, effective today."
Ross, hired by Disney CEO Bob Iger in October 2009, stirred controversy by pushing many seasoned executives out of the studio and hiring outsider MT Carney to run marketing. She left Disney in January. But no doubt his greatest setback was the failure of the big-budget John Carter, which led to a $200 million write-down for the company in March.

That also reportedly led to friction and complaints from Pixar's John Lasseter, who also is chief creative officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Iger praised Ross in a statement released Friday: "For more than a decade, Rich Ross’s creative instincts, business acumen and personal integrity have driven results in key businesses for Disney, redefining success in kids and family entertainment and launching franchises that generate value across our entire company. His vision and leadership opened doors for Disney around the world, making our brand part of daily life for millions of people. I appreciate his countless contributions throughout his entire career at Disney and expect he will have tremendous success in whatever he chooses to do next."
It has long been difficult for an "outsider" from television to gain traction in the industry's insular film studio culture, as such executives as Brandon Tartikoff and Gail Berman learned during brief and unhappy tenures at Paramount. The same was true of Ross, whose manner struck some in the industry as detached and even patronizing.

Ross greenlighted few projects during his tenure at the studio. His first movie, the low-budget high school dramedy Prom, grossed just $10 million worldwide and struck some observers as a film more suited for television. Two other Disney projects initiated under Ross, Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great and Powerful and the Johnny Depp starrer The Lone Ranger, are $200 million-plus gambles. Ross' negotiation on Lone Ranger brought the studio press attention last summer when he and Iger held a hard line with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski to trim costs.
Ross' abrupt resignation leaves the question of who will take the job. Given Disney's decision to dial back on the number of films that the studio produces -- as well as Iger's reputation for disliking the movie business generally -- the job might have limited appeal to top candidates. On the other hand, studio chief jobs rarely become available, and the relative stability atop Disney's rivals means the job will still be coveted. The lack of a deep bench left in the wake of Ross's tenure would seem to make the addition of a seasoned executive a necessity.
Read Ross' resignation letter below:
For the last 15 years, I have had the opportunity to work with incredibly talented people on behalf of the world’s best loved brand. During that time, we’ve told some amazing stories around the world, created successful TV programming, movies and franchises that generated new opportunities for the company in the process.

I’ve always said our success is created and driven by our people -- whom I consider to be the absolute best in the business. But, the best people need to be in the right jobs, in roles they are passionate about, doing work that leverages the full range of their abilities. It’s one of the leadership lessons I’ve learned during my career, and it’s something I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to as I look at the challenges and opportunities ahead.

I believe in this extraordinary Walt Disney Studios team, and I believe in our strong slate of films and our ability to make and market them better than anyone else. But, I no longer believe the Chairman role is the right professional fit for me. For that reason, I have made the very difficult decision to step down as Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, effective today.

It has been my honor to work with such incredible teams -- at Disney Channels Worldwide and The Walt Disney Studios and the many other Disney businesses I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with. I know I leave the Studios in good hands and, even on separate paths, I am confident we are all destined for continued success.

If he had anything to do with the marketing of a few recent movies (particularly Princess & The Frog, Tangled, Muppets, and John Carter), he needs to find something he's better at.

Maybe mopping floors or cleaning stopped-up toilets.

Johnny Depp is going to be the Lone Ranger? I just saw a commercial for Dark Shadows, which appears to be the standard Johnny Depp movie where he gets to be a weirdo. Can't picture him as the Lone Ranger.
