Wow! I'm amazed someone had that much recent stuff (Amazons Attack is still going on, isn't it?) and was willing to part with it!
Are these "hot" comics?

Re: Big score........
A guy who wrote for DC at one point now gets ALL their books every week or month or whatever and he gives them to a friend of mine to sell at conventions or or whatever. I get first dibs. I've pretty much eschewed buying any DC over the past year or two because I know I'm going to get it for super cheap (20-50 cents per book) down the road. The only DC I'm getting monthly is Batman, Teen Titans, JLA and now Green Lantern with the Sinestro Corps. But I still have pretty much every DC title from the last seven years and I bought them for a fraction of cover price. If I could find a way to do that with Marvel, I'd be in hog heaven.

That's an amazing situation to be in... damn. The best part is not having to wait for the books - you can actually read a whole story without forgetting stuff in the time between issues.

Re: Big score........
No kidding.
If it's not a breach of some confidentiality agreement or anything, how does a former writer get to such favored status? I'd think he'd just get copies of books he worked on. Do you have to write a certain amount, or for a certain length of time? Or is this guy's name something like Denny O'Neil or Neil Gaiman?

Re: Big score........
It's likely some part of their work agreement - the writers "on staff" or whatever are expected to keep up with "current events" in case they want to write again later. DC likely comps them issues so that they can keep current with as little trouble as possible. Again, a very nice arrangement. I wonder if Marvel does similar things?

The writer in question is named Tischman. He frequently pairs with Howard Chaykin on various Vertigo titles, most notably the cult vampire book, Bite Club.
It sounds a sweet gig. Note to self: write comics so as to score free books from major publishers...

Re: Big score........
I went down to WizardWorldLA this weekend. The actual show was for shit, I'm glad I don't have to pay being a "professional" and all, but I did hit several of the 50 cent bins and made a haul. I got a huge run of Black Panther, Iron Man, X-Force and Captain America books, plus a lot of onesie/twosie holes in my other runs. Then I got my usual DC batch of books. I got 100+ books at WWLA and another 160 or so from the DC connection.
So I've purchased more books in the past week than Rogue II has in his ENTIRE pathetic collection he hauled from his parent's house.
Wackity schmackity Doo!!

Re: Big score........
I never posted the most amazing scores of my life.
First, a friend and I were collecting. We started around the same time. He had a lot of older Batman stuff, and some Superman. Then, one day, he decided he didn't want to collect anymore. He sold me the whole collection for half value.
A friend of a friend had collected GIJoe comics before I did. I had a lot of holes in my collection. He sold me the bunch--almost all the books from about #3 to #90, along with most of the Special Missions and some other assorted goodies, mostly in VF condition--for $20.
And here's the killer: In high school, a guy who sat next to me in Spanish class knew I was a comic collector, and like TMNT. He had a neighbor who'd collected TMNT comics early on. Somehow the guy in my class found out he wanted to get rid of them and told him about me. He said he wanted $1 per book. I told my classmate I'd need to see what they were, and nearly shat myself when he brought them in. Turtles 1-25 (or thereabouts) along with all the one shots and two copies of Fugitoid! I was in an honest mood, and didn't see any need to rip off the guy, so I told him these were worth a lot more. Apparently, the guy just wanted rid of them, and, also being in an honest mood, wouldn't take more than the original $1/book. #1 was a third printing, and #2 was second printing (still worth $100 and $50 at the time), but the rest were all first prints.
That was even better than the time I was at this antiques show they used to do at the mall near me back in VA. One time, I started rooting around in a quarter bin, and found a copy of an old Green Lantern copy in great shape. I bought it just because of what it was. When I got home, I read it. "Huh," I thought. "I didn't know that Guy Gardner was an active GL back then. And he's just like a Hal clone with lighter hair." When I was done, I cracked open the Overstreet, expecting to see it was worth $3-$5.
It was the fucking first appearance of Guy Gardner. If not for the Turtles haul, that would be my single greatest haul ever, though it was only one book.
Okay, an eBay search tells me that the massive drops in prices for back issues wasn't kind to GL #116. I still stand by that.

Re: Big score........
I did that except with the issue of Amazing Spider-Man where MJ shows up at the door on the last page and says "Face it ,Tiger...you just hit the jackpot." I found the issue in some back issue bin for dirt cheap and only got it because it was an older issue of ASM and it was cheap. I didn't realize until I got it home and read it what it was.

One of the SEVERAL LCS in my area (seriously, there are like 6 with in a 15 minute drive of my place...its awesome) was having a clearance sale on older boooks and toys. I picked up 7 DC Direct figures for 5 bucks each and over a hundred books. Including several Uncanny X-Men issues I was missing from when I stopped in the mid/late 90s.
Fuck I'm still trying to work through the last batch I bought at WWLA. And I STILL haven't touched any of those Superman titles from last year. It's insane.
