On Friday, I celebrated my first wedding anniversary. We played hooky from work; I took the wife to a Japanese sushi joint we often drive by but have never been to. Then we walked thru a couple thrift shops and I talked the owner into selling me an $18 Maggot Marvel Legend figure for $10. Then we went to the underwhelmng Beetlejuice sequel, before returning home and eating some of our year old wedding cake from the freezer.
On Saturday, I got up super early and drove out to the middle of bumfuck nowhere Illinois (aka Wyoming; the town, not the State) for the ANNUAL GARAGE SALE. I hadn’t been in a couple years, and the guy hasn’t had a show in the Quad Cities because the venue he used quadrupled their asking price for their conference room from $200 to $850. Anyway, I filled up a long box with 324 comics for $110. He has a deal where if you fill two boxes for $220, you get a third box free, but I could barely find enough stuff to fill one box this time around, even going thru the older stacks of boxes in his garage.
But I still made a few finds.
Also, I detest the combination of variant covers and frequent relaunches of titles. DC is particularly egregious about this, and there are several unintended additions to my collection based on this. I don’t want to bitch about it for every listing, so I’m just announcing here at the beginning along with an easily remembered codeword:Fudge. If you see Fudge, it means I bought books I already had because I have a variant cover, or the book from a previous run was in the middle of a later run and I wasn’t doing due diligence as I grabbed them.
Anyway, here’s what I got.
Alien 10. From Marvel’s newest series. Or one of them. I think they’ve already relaunched it three or four times in the short time they’ve had the Fox licenses.
Aquaman 38. Variant cover.
Aquamen 1 and 6. A newish mini featuring Arthur, and Garth, and Manta, and Jackson.
Astro City 1/2.
Astro City Dark Age:Book Two 2. I find AC Dark Age books ALL the time, but it’s always the ones I already have. I need seven more across the four minis.
Astro City 13. From the newer Vertigo run. Still a dozen left to find.
A couple Avengers issues from the All Ages/Animated series line.
Batgirl 7, 10-12, 14, 20, Annual 1. From the Rebirth series. Four more to find, including obnoxiously expensive variant of issue 23.
Batgirl and the Birds of Prey 19. Just issue 1 and 22 to go.
Batman Secret Files:Clownhunter oneshot.
I Am Batman 3, 15.
Batman Beyond 8.
Batwoman 3-5, 16. Only five to go from her Rebirth series.
Black Adam 5. Variant cover.
Black Adam oneshot. This might be a pack-in comic from a McFarlane action figure.
Black Lightning:Cold Dead Hands 3-6. Finished the mini.
Black Manta 5. Variant cover.
Bloodshot 16. From the ‘98 series. Two more to go.
Cave Carson has an Interstellar Eye 6. Just need issue 5.
Checkmate 5, 6. Finished the mini.
City Boy 2. Just need 1 and 6.
Curse of Brimstone 3, 7, 11. Just need the Annual.
Cyborg 5. Fudge. And I think I’ve made this same mistake more than once because both series came out in 2016, so in my notes it says ‘Cyborg’16 5’ and I keep grabbing the WRONG FUCKING ISSUE 5.

Cyborg 4. Variant cover from the new Dawn of DC mini.
Dark Crisis:The Dark Army 1. Variant cover.
Dark Crisis 7. Two variant covers of the final issue. There’s a third cover that forms a triptych that has Flash/GL on it.
Damage 1. Three more to find.
DC New Talent Showcase 2018. Yearly $8 book that only lasted three years. I have ‘16 and ‘18. Still need ‘17.
Generations Forged oneshot. Not technically a Fudge, since I got the alternate cover knowing I already had this issue.
DC Ghouls Just Want To Have Fun. $10 Halloween themed anthology.
DC Silver Edition Man of Steel 5. Reprint of John Byrne’s Superman reboot.
DC vs Vampires:All Out War 6. Variant cover. There have been one maxi, two minis, and a couple oneshots in this series. Don’t have any of them except this one.
Dead Man Logan 5-7, 10. Fudge. But that’s on me because I didn’t have it written down. Needed 8 thru 10. So I got one right at least.
Deathstroke 1, 9. From the second Nu52 series. Finished it.
Deathstroke, Inc 1. The regular cover. Had the variant already, but not a Fudge because I did it deliberate.
Demon:Hell is Earth 3, 6. Finished the mini.
Devil’s Reign:Superior Four 3. Less of a Fudge, and more of a safety assurance. Already had it.
Flash 60.
Flash 6. Variant cover from the current series.
Freedom Fighters 1, 6, 8, 12. Finished the newest maxi series.
Future State:Gotham 10, 11, 13. I didn’t have this written down, and I know I have other issues, so if it’s fudge thats on me.
Street Fighter vs GIJoe 2, 4, 5 and a couple Sub covers. Potential fudge because it wasn’t written down, but I needed 5 so I’ll call it even.
Gotham Academy:Second Semester 5, 8, 11, 12. Finished the sequel series.
Gotham City Garage 7. Finished the series.
Green Arrow 43. Variant cover. Fudge.
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps RB and 47 variant. Fudge.
Green Lanterns 49, 52. Variant covers. One Fudge.
Green Lantern 8, 9. Variant covers from the current Dawn of DC series.
Hawkman 1(variant), 8, 27.
Hellblazer 203. From the Vertigo run.
Hellblazer RB, 1. From the Rebirth series. Finished
Hellions 1. Fudge. Thought I had a variant cover, but I didn’t.
Totally Awesome Hulk 22. YES! Expensive HTF first appearance of that wanker Weapon H. FINISHED THE SERIES!(and this wasn’t even the best find of the day…)
Injustice 10.
Inferior Five 1. Variant cover.
James Bond 007:Eidolon 9. Just need issue 12.
Justice League Dark 11, 25. Fudge. Don’t put Nu52 issues in the middle of a run of post-Rebirth issues, you tossers!
Justice League of America 13. From the Rebirth series. Finished the run.
Justice League 1(variant), 5(variant), 9. From the second Rebirth relaunch. I’m trying to get the main covers and the Jim Lee variants from the early issues, but I think I have a full reading run at this point.
Justice League Dark 2-8, 9(variant), 10, 13, 15-17. Both this series and JLOdyssey, I have a mishmash of regular and variant covers. My list says I’m missing 14 issues, but it may just be that at this point I’m completing full runs of both the regular and variant covers.
JLDark/Wonder Woman:Witching Hour 1. Crossover oneshot I already had. Fudge.
JL vs Suicide Squad 1-6. I already had these, but I know one of them was a bad copy, so I got some variant covers. Might have doubled up on a few of them, but I did it intentional, so not Fudge.
Kneel Before Zod 2. Variant cover.
Legion of Super Heroes 1, 2. Regular covers, so possible Fudge.
Lois Lane 3, 6.
Lone Ranger & Tonto 1. Need issue 2.
Nightwing 12, 14, 19, 22, 23, 27-29, 31-34, 38-40, 43, 45(variant), 61(variant), Annual 1. Minor amount of Fudge, but I filled in a big chunk of the series. Only 19 issues to go, and some of those are just variant covers I want. Also, issue 29 is an expensive Dark Metal tie-in(but that’s not the best find of the day either…)
Massive:Ninth Wave 1.
Mr. Majestic 4, 5. Still need 6 thru 9.
Majestic 1. Need 2 thru 4 from the DC mini.
Majestic 11-13, 16, 17. Finished the series.
Man-Bat 5.
Martian Manhunter 4, 5, 10-12. Finished the 2016 series.
Metal Men 8.
Miracleman:Silver Age 7.
Mister Miracle 12. Variant cover. Missing issue 1 which is expensive/HTF.
Monkey Prince 4.
Nextwave 4, 11. I always grab copies of Nextwave when I see them. It’s been almost twenty years.
Nightman vs Wolverine 0. Eh, might’ve already had this.
OHotMU 2, 7. The original series. Just missing 1 and 15. They had a couple copies of 15, but they were in rugged condition. Also, reading the bios from 1983 is a hoot.
Official Index of Amazing Spidey 6.
Old Man Logan 15. FINISHED. Finally can delete this series from my list.
100 Bullets 9, 47, 66. Still missing a majority of the series, but it’s not a priority.
Phoenix Resurrection 1(variant), 5. Ha. I knew I was missing some issues, but I never wrote down which ones. So of course I grabbed the ones I already had.
Powers 11, 13. Just need 1 and 4 from the original Image run. And like ten more from all the other series, but its becoming less of a priority.
Red Hood & The Outlaws 7-9, 11, 13-19, 23, 24, 25(var), 26(var), 27(var). Slight Fudge, but almost finished the run. Missing six issues, and most of those might just be variant covers I want.
Revolutionaries 2. RI cover. This is only the second issue of this series I’ve ever found. And I’ve been hunting for awhile.
Riddler:Year One 2. New mini written by the actor that played him in The Batman movie.
Robins 1, 5.
Robin 8.
Shade/WW Milk Wars oneshot.
Shazam 1, 4, 15.
New Champion of Shazam 1.
Shazam 1.
Silk 18. FINISHED!
Spider-Gwen 8, 24, 31. Only need 0 and 34 for a full run. 0 is just a reprint of her 1st appearance, and 34 is the final issue so it’s HTF. But 24 is a $60 book! It’s the first appearance of Venom-Gwen(Gwenom?) and it was just sitting there in the box. Definitely the highlight of the haul!!
Suicide Squad 6, 8, 8(var) from the ‘20 run.
Suicide Squad 10, 11, 15 from the ‘21 run.
Suicide Squad:King Shark 3.
Action Comics 1061. Variant cover.
Superman RB variant cover. Finished the first Rebirth series.
New Super-Man 8, 10-15, 17, 19, 22. The Chinese Superman. Still need most of the back half of the series.
Superman:Son of Kal-El 4, 7, 12, and a couple variants of 17.
Super-Sons 14, Annual 1. Finished the first series.
Superwoman 16. Finished the series.
Kid Supreme 3.
Swamp Thing 5(var), 7, 14.
Sword of Azrael 4, 4(var).
Task Force Z 4, 6, 8, 11. How is Bane a zombie in this series if he elaborately faked his death on A-Day in the Joker series? Can’t be both DC editorial!!
Teen Titans 8-10, 12, 15, 16. Definitely minor Fudge going on there, I was accidentally looking at my Titans list instea—wait. Do I have the first fucking appearance of the Batman Who Laughs?!! HOLY SHIT! I guess that Spider-Gwen is NOT the best find of the day…
Terrifics 17, 18, 23. Finished the series. Also, just above, I have the first appearance of the Batman Who Laughs.
Titans United:Bloodpact 3, 5, 6.
Titans RB, 8, 8(var), 11-13, 15-17, 23, 25, 26, 28-30, 33, 35(var), Annual 1. Major Fudge going on here, but I think I only have ten issues to go. Or less, if they’re still on the list because I’m looking for variant covers. Also…Batman Who Laughs.
Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril 4, 5. Finished the mini.
Transformers. A couple of Hasbro covers featuring Rattrap and Waspinator.
Transformers:MTMTE 43. I’ve been looking for a second copy of this issue for awhile, because under the first cover there’s a second “Cover E” variant that’s an homage to the famous 1980’s Justice League cover. And I kinda want to take the cover off so I can display the secret cover. But that would mean mutilating an issue. I’m conflicted. (I was gonna say I’m torn, but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna give any of you an easy lay up like that…)
Trinity 13-15. Finished the Rebirth series.
Truth & Justice 2. I’ve been looking for this series for awhile and the only issue I’ve seen is just the regular cover of the variant I already had. It’s a different cover, so not Fudge. Barely.
Unexpected 8. Finished the series.
Wastelanders Black Widow and Starlord oneshots. Now I have all five oneshots. So, finished.
Wetworks 5, 6, 9-11, 14, 21, 23, 29. Still missing 16 issues.
Wicked+Divine 26, 30, 36, 44. Still missing a couple dozen issues.
WildCATs 1, 1(var) from a recent maxi series. Green Arrow makes a cameo, so I guess we are in continuity this week.
Wonder Girl 2.
Nubia:Queen ot Amazons 1-3 of a 4 part mini.
X-Factor 4. Regular cover, since I got the Alex Ross cover originally. I hope. I guessed on this one.
X-Men 1, 13-15. Same with these. I’m hoping to slot these in where I had variants before, but I’m guessing on the issue numbers.
X-O Manowar 23. Definite Fudge. This must’ve been stuck in between some other issues somewhere and found its way into the box.
Apart from the three or four incredible finds, I’m happy to finish off my Silk and Old Man Logan runs, as well as a few smaller series. Now I have to decide which books go in my “current” boxes and thus get added into the pile of reading to keep up with what I’ve already read. It’s gonna be quite a bit. *sigh* I guess the G thru I box will have to wait. Or I could read those and then dig into all these books.
The Batman Who Laughs.
