anarky wrote:Yeah, I thought that list was super-duper horseshit. I could come up with some reason almost every fucking one was wrong:
1) Shipwreck was. TEH. SHIT! Show me someone who doesn't like Shipwreck, like this dude, and I'll show you someone who doesn't like GIJoe.
2) Lifeline may have been a pacifist, but, well, he replaced Doc in the toyline. The pacifist medic is more realistic than one who will pop caps; Doc's filecard didn't say he was a non-combatant, but he was always portrayed as one. Plus, there's a fucking awesome issue of Special Missions where Leatherneck (I think) takes the same attitude of Lifeline being a piece of pacifist crap who won't do anything, then he unloads some tai chi (I think--a totally non-aggressive martial art he's a master of) and beats the shit out of some river pirates, saving the entire team. Lifeline and/or Doc were absolutely necessary for those of us who took the bios seriously and played violently with our Joes.
I had Lifeline. My father was a Marine Reserve pilot. His unit had a little Christmas party and my parents brought me, my friend, and my brother. Santa showed up in an F-4 and handed out toys. That's how I got Lifeline. I figured he was necessary since I saw the Mash TV show and knew people got hurt in war.
3) Tollbooth was fucking lame, granted, but he came with the goddamned Bridgelayer. One of the most pointless vehicles in the Joe toyline, but one with a shitload of play value. Did you ever see that thing? It's fucking awesome; basically a construction vehicle given military credibility.
Never saw it. Never cared.
4) Every seven-year-old knew what a mine detector was. At least myself and every kid I knew. Even if it was just "a metal detector that finds mines that will blow up if you step on them," we knew. And we always had Cobra laying a shit-ton of mines. Not to mention the filecard says Tripwire's the explosives expert, and he has mines in his backpack, so we all figured he laid the fuckers, too. The way we played, one of those tiny plastic discs could destroy a HISS and kill everyone on board.
Yes. Another one I had. Other than Soundwave, it seems like none of the Joes or Transformers I had were featured in the cartoons.
5) Airtight... dude, the guy was awesome! His filecard said he was the nerd; we could all look up to him. And, well, nothing actually says the thing he has is a vacuum, so it was always a toxic waster launcher to us.
6) Law has a fucking dog. And he's a military cop. I never figured him as arresting drunk Joes; he and his awesome-ass dog were military cops who were so damned good at what they did, they got to be on the Joe team. They're the legal experts when it comes to busting criminals.
7) Dial-Tone was also necessary (unless you had Breaker), since regular Joes didn't carry communications equipment. A small group had to get captured, and Dial-Tone got the word out for the main force to open a can of whoopass on the Cobras. That was as vital to our games as starting out on Cybertron and winding up on Earth was for our Transformers games.

Mainframe.... Okay, that one I can't argue against. Breaker could do everything he could do better, and had a gun. At least one in a holster, made onto his leg.
Other than Mainframe, I don't remember ever seeing any of those toys in person. I actually wanted Mainframe, but never got him.
BTW, Snake Eyes, in case you are wondering: swords in scabbards fit in his backpack hole and on his belt, on the right. The leg holster holds only the pistol that won't accommodate a silencer (the one that will is too loose). However, the silencer will fit in the small hole in the front of the holster. You figured out anything else? I really wish they included picture reference or instructions or something.
Crap. I didn't even notice that loop on the holster. So he can hold the black sword and a gun. One pistol and 2 swords hook onto him, which leaves the other pistol and 2nd gun as extra. Right?
Oh, and I have about $40 in credit at Amazon. I'm thinking of using it on the Joe Attack on Cobra Island set and the
Stalker/Snake Eyes/Cobra Trooper/Baroness DVD set. It should only cost me about $10-$15. Is that worth it?

$10-15? Yeah, I'd say that's a good deal. You'd get the Stalker you need, with the JUMP pack (I don't remember its use in the cartoon well, but I think he was the only guy to ever use it in the comic). The Timber repaint is nice, and additional Cobras are always cool. The Snake Eyes is kinda useless, and Baroness looks cool in the package until you take her out and realize she's almost a straight repaint of Scarlett.

K-Mart had a huge banner on their website that there was a major toy clearance and toys were up to 75% off. I clicked on it. I saw a Revenge of the Fallen Jetfire for $45, and thought, "I'm not sure, but that doesn't seem to be a deal." Then I saw the Steel Crusher (the GIJoe Rise of Cobra Humvee) for a whopping $30 and said to myself, "Okay, everyone out of the pool."

I went to K-Mart on Sunday with the intention of using my gift card to get some new Craftsman pliers. Naturally they didn't have the set I wanted. On the way back out, I noticed they had the Joe & Cobra Mechs on clearance for $15. (Ended up having to go to Sears to get the pliers.)
Just went to Amazon to order those 2 sets. So I just ordered the 2 sets. I was confused at first on the DVD set. They wanted $19 for it, plus shipping. I thought I saw it previously on amazon cheaper and with free shipping. I searched the 17 pages of the Joe section thinking I could find something else I wanted instead. Ended up stumbling upon a 2nd listing for the same Stalker/Snake Eyes DVD set for $17 w/ free shipping.
After my gift card/credit, it came up to just over $12.

I forgot to mention that the Pit Headquarters from the movie is $40 at TRU's website. I don't have the space for it.

I got the Pit after Christmas last year, when Kohl's website blew them out. I haven't been able to open it. Lots of awesome RAH nods worked into it.
And I found the VAMP today at Ross. A girl who looked to be about high school age was stocking the shelves; they'd put out a lot more Wal-Mart 2-packs, some more MARS Troopers, and a case or two of the VAMP wave. She saw me comparing the paint on the two Clutches (the only part visible), and told me they had the Cobra Fury also. I told her I had that one (though it's tempting as hell to get a second at that price) and thanked her. I hope she's not just seasonal help and about to be laid off; collector-friendly employees are hard to come by and more precious to the geek as gold. It sure as hell beats the blank stares that clearly communicate "You're not getting $50 worth of GIJoe stuff for yourself are you, and keeping it from some hypothetical kid who probably doesn't exist, asshole?"

And, no, the fifty bucks on Joe stuff was not this evening. But when you find TRU 5-packs, WM 2-packs, MARS Troopers, vehicles, and basic figures, it can add up quickly.

Got the Cobra Shock Trooper. It is almost as if he is meant to be the POC equivalent of the blue shirt Cobras. Except way cooler.

Another canceled Target exclusive is showing up at Ross. I didn't even know it existed until I read a report about it. It's called the "Sand Serpent." Basically a brown repaint of the mini-Night Raven. Which would be incredibly fucking lame, but it comes with a Star Viper figure.
I might get one and put the plane on eBay or something. Maybe I'll keep it, but a desert camo stealth plane seems a bit silly to me. And this from the guy who had to get three hot pink Elite Vipers.

I just read about it. If I see one this weekend, I might pick it up. I don't have the Night Raven yet.
My Joe DVD set arrived today. They didn't include a knife or pistol for Stalker or Snake Eyes. One of my green shirts donated his to Stalker. I wasn't planning on using the radioactive Snake Eyes, so screw him. The Cobra Island set should arrive tomorrow. Stalker's head might end up on Beachhead's body from the Snarler bike with a different vest.
Picked up a Reactive Impact Armor Heavy Duty with the intention of using his head for Iceberg. TRU has Snow Job w/ the snowmobile for $, and I though the body might suffice for Iceberg. I didn't know Heavy Duty was actually a Joe from 1991.
GI Joe is so much easier to customize that Star Wars.

The Attack of Cobra Island set arrived today. Yeah.
You know. I kind of like the desert paint scheme of that Raven.
Is the new Hiss worth getting for $12? I'd prefer to get a vintage style, but I don't see that happening unless they decide to do a 30th anniversary line. It appears Bizzaro The Grin has purchased all of them on the secondary market and refuses to sell them to anyone without consenting to receiving anal sex.

I know I've said it's flawed, but, yes, it's definitely worth $12. The vehicle's cool (though the stickers are a pain in the ass, even beyond normal Joe standards), but the driver is almost worth $12 by himself. Plus, the ones at Ross are the second batch, meaning they're black and not brown.
I picked up the Sand Serpent today. Funny thing, the paint scheme is growing on me now (though it still seems a bit odd for a high-altitude stealth plane to have a desert paint scheme), and the figure looks cheaper in person. He looks like a low-quality kitbash with the vintage helmet (adjusted for the figure's size).
I'm thinking next time I'm at Ross, I'm buying all the Shockwave/Night Creeper sets. Shockwave makes nice custom fodder, and one can never have too many Night Creepers (provided one wants them in the first place).

Supposedly this next wave is supposed to be shown in a magazine next month.

* Jungle BAT
* General Hawk
* Blowtorch
* Steel Brigade Trooper
* Cobra Trooper
* Cobra Commander
And here is a picture of the Jungle BAT. Looks like they just repainted the old BAT with green & black camouflage.

The Cobra extreme condition sets are supposedly showing up at Ross for $16. I most likely cave in and get one or both.
