G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero

You know what pissed me off as a kid? Of all the Transformers and GI Joe toys I had, the only ones that were even sort of major characters in the cartoon were Soundwave, Ravage, and Laserbeak. Prowl, the excavator Destructicon, and the triceratops Dinobot were more of background characters. I don't recall any of the Joes I had being in many episodes.

I found Firefly and the Red Ninja today. Also got Buzzer and Beach-Head (finally!) and found a Lady Jaye that didn't suck too much. I can't bring myself to get that Serpentor. I hate the original character. This figure is a weird hybrid of his original and "Coil" costume from the DD run. And the figure blows. So there's no reason to get him.

Snow Job was the guy with the red beard. He didn't have a removeable helmet. It was permanently molded (along with the goggles) to the head.

Judging from the "coming soon" silhouettes on the cardbacks of the figures I got today, Snow Job appears to be in the next wave.

Why isn't everything Hasbro does this good? Sure, I could leave the Storm Shadow with massive honking bow, but three new comics by Larry Hama? Fuck, vyn, you need a "popping a boner" smiley.

Fuck me, those first 60 or so issues rocked ass, including the "Fred" storyline about the Crimson Guardsman. I finally got my first 3 25th Ann Joes today - had to get them from a comic shop (but only $9.99 each - that's what they'd cost at TRU here anyhow). Firefly, Stalker and Beachhead!!!

JJ, the series lost a bit of momentum shortly after the Fred storyline, around the time of the Cobra Civil War. But it picked up with a vengeance in #93. That issue and the next two years' worth featured Snake Eyes getting plastic surgery and wasting a building full of Cobras, Baroness shooting Scarlett in the head, the return of Cobra Commander, Cobra Commander sealing Fred and several other Cobras in an underground freighter (long story), Snake Eyes giving up on life (because he didn't think Scarlett would come out of her coma) and allowing Storm Shadow to reprogram him into an emotionless killing machine to fight Major Bludd in Europe, Snake Eyes declaring personal war against Cobra Commander, Tomax and Xamot misinterpreting CC's orders and killing several Joes, the bloodiest battle in Joe history (with plenty of casualties), Destro and Baroness giving up their evil ways, and the Joes siding with Destro and Baroness when CC ordered a hit on them.

I remember it being just awesome when I jumped in on it (at issued #12). I had a HELLUVA time tracking down the issues I had missed, and paid too, too, too money for issues 1&2 back in the day. I actually had a subscription to GIJoe - the only "to the door" comic subscription I've ever had (I stopped because they always showed up folded lengthwise - that was bullshit).

Anywhore, I think my brother and I have a full run (minus the original #3 - it's a reprint) up to about issue 70. I'll have to check out the costs of filling it in, but the new figures will have fueled interest in the books I'm sure.

I bought Beachhead. He was just too cool for $5 to pass up. I'm just buying the few Joes I had as a kid and not going to be a full blown collector of this line. Target also had the 2 packs with the comic book.

We also saw Lady Jaye. My wife suddenly told me she had both girl GI Joes. Was Scarlett in the earlier wave are they done shipping them?

Scarlett was in the Joe 5-pack, but they recently revealed those characters will be Wave 4, which should be coming pretty soon.

Okay, that second Cobra pack ("Legions," which plays the Cobra theme) pegwarmed like a motherfucker before Christmas, but has vanished. By my reckoning, it should be about $10-15 at Target now.

All five local Targets have gotten rid of the entire buttload.

I say this since both JJ and myself were hoping to score them once the clearancing began.

I ordered a case of wave 5 from EE - 49.99 for the 8 figures (6 of which I want for my own collection) is too good a deal with our dollar at par these days.

I'd be glad to get rid of either Shipwreck or Destro for any plain Cobra Soldiers or Officers anyone might have, Stormshadow (original) or Snake Eyes with Timber. There aren't a whole ton of these I'd ever hope to get (I only collected GI Joe up until Lifeline's wave came out - and some of those I wouldn't get again), but those would be on the list.
