Rock Hall of Fame Definitive 200
Okay, remember a couple of years ago when JJR copied and pasted the Rolling Stone (?) Top 200 list here in parts, and we discussed it, and then bitched about what was missing?
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has just announced the "Definitive 200." There are some real innerestin' choices and omissions here. I'll throw out groups of 25 every few days, and we'll gripe about them.
First 25:
1) Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)
2) Pink Floyd: Dark Side Of The Moon (1973)
3) Michael Jackson: Thriller (1982)
4) Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
5) U2: Joshua Tree (1987)
6) Rolling Stones: Exile On Main Street (1972)
7) Carole King: Tapestry (1971)
8 ) Bob Dylan: Highway '61 Revisited (1965)
9) Beach Boys: Pet Sounds (1966)
10) Nirvana: Nevermind (1996)
11) Pearl Jam: Ten (1991)
12) Beatles: Abbey Road (1969)
13) Santana: Supernatural (1999)
14) Metallica: Metallica (1991)
15) Bruce Springsteen: Born To Run (1984)
16) Prince: Purple Rain (1984)
17) AC/DC: Back In Black (1980)
18 ) Rolling Stones: Let It Bleed (1969)
19) Doors: Doors (1967)
20) Grateful Dead: American Beauty (1970)
21) Shania Twain: Come On Over (1997)
22) Who: Who's Next (1971)
23) Stevie Wonder: Songs In The Key Of Life (1976)
24) Fleetwood Mac: Rumours (1977)
25) Pink Floyd: Wall (1979)
Funny enough, I have all of these except Born to Run, and it's been on my list of things to eventually pick up.

My comments:
Pet Sounds is too low, and Sgt Pepper is a frigging overrated album that always gets top marks, but I'm used to that. No one wants to admit that Sgt Pepper isn't as good as people pretend it is, because they're worried they might look stupid.
You know what? It's not a bad album, but it's not the best album of all time. It's not even the Beatles' best album.
Come On Over is a good album, but Top 25? I'm not even 100% convinced it belongs on the list.
Other than that, no real complaints so far.

So nothing good came out recently? Santana is the newest one on the list and everybody know's thats like a tip of the hat to his old school stuff.
As with anarky I'm a little suspect of Come on Over.
Next it's Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Both over 15 years old.
And then everything else is 80's and older.

Ok, the Rock and Roll HOF list. I think PJ and Nirvana should not be there, why you ask? They arent even 20 years old. Dont you have to be a band for 25 years at least to be nominated? How the fuck can you have a double standard? It should be for members only I think.
BTW Floyd should be number one, Pet Sounds is too low, and yes, Sgt Peppers is too high, even Zep should have beat it out.

I think Nirvana should be where it is based solely on the "revolution" it brought about.
Agree with Chux about Sgt. Pepper. Not a bad album, but its not THE Beatles.
"Ten" doesn't belong anywhere near this portion of the list. The album was OK, but nowhere near the 11th best ever.
Shania Twain does not belong on a list put out by the ROCK AND ROLL hall of fame. Period.
I have a hunch that we'll be seeing a lot of Radiohead and White Stripes in the coming 175
If anyone wants to better understand the lameness of pretty much everything done by the Rock and Roll HOF, take a visit to Cleveland. That place is a waste of $20.

Again, I have most of these. I don't have Hotel California or Boston, but might get them eventually. I don't have Whitney Houston or Marshall Mathers, and would rather put my balls into a snapping turtle's mouth than buy them. And, though I loathe Grease, my wife has that CD, so technically I have it.
For the Dixie Chicks, Home is a much better album than Wide Open Spaces, which is a typical slightly-above-mediocre debut album.
Achtung Baby should've been much higher, as should Appetite for Destruction, What's Going On, Revolver, License to Ill, and Slippery When Wet.
Under the Table and Dreaming would be a better choice for DMB, and American Idiot better for Green Day.
Alanis seems more one of those "everybody has it" albums than an "everybody needs it." It gets old after hearing it for the 1,000,000th time.
No real major complaints, except that no one gives a rat's ass about that dipshit Eminem anymore, and it's time for the critics to stop blowing him.

I thought the same thing, EP. "Appetite...", "Revolver", "Hotel California", "Are You Experienced" and "Boston" all belong in the first set of 25 IMO.Eternal Padawan wrote:Maybe it's a personal thing, but some of the "Next 25" are better than some of the top 25 in my opinion.
Eminem? Are you even kidding me?!
Outkast: I haven't heard anything but the singles off this double album, but since Rocket"I hate fucking rap music"Boy owns it and likes it I'd have to say that it does have some merit.
Norah Jones = Over rated (Bring the hate, bitches)
Whitney Houston? Are you even kidding me?
I'm not a huge Zeppelin fan. Is "II" truly their best album?

No, IV (aka ZOSO) is, which is probably why it's #4.CaptainSolo1138 wrote:I'm not a huge Zeppelin fan. Is "II" truly their best album?
The first three are equally good, IMHO. Almost interchangeable, though not at all in a bad way.
