Thriller 25

Yeah, I just picked this up for $10. It was the first album I ever got back in 82. Listening to it is a pretty weird experience after all these years. It's funny how something so ubitquitous as Thriller invariably becomes a joke for awhile, the most uncool thing in the world, but time ultimately tells the tale. I would always stop on "Fever" (or was it "Flash"?)when it had the songs from the album playing on Vice City. You just cannot shake that bassline from "Billie Jean". I appreciate it more now.

What is really crazy is how much it reminded me how universally appealing this album was, and just how huge a star MJ was in 1982. Every kid on the planet seemed to have the album or want it. And why not? The beats, the hooks, and the sheer exuberance contained on the party tracks make it impossible to listen to and not get your mood elevated.

It's really a shame Mike went off the deep end immediately after he got his Thriller money. It's impossible to separate the notoriety of guy from that voice, which moves so fluidly and with such ease you barely notice the range he packs into one line.

The bonus tracks pretty much suck, or at least are not much to write home about. Then again, improving on the Quincy Jones originals is a pretty tall task.

In 82, it was Star Wars, Reagan, ET, and MJ.

I have the original on CD, and figured I'd pass on this. They re-released it with different bonus tracks in 2001 (?), all of which are on iTunes. The demo version of "Billie Jean" sounds pretty cool from the clip. I'd be more likely to download that then the new bonus tracks.

As strange and disturbed as he is, I'd like to see Michael get his act back together and do one more killer album. I doubt it will happen. Most of the pop giants of the 80s are gone. Michael is insane. Janet has become lousy 21st century R&B fluff. Madonna is an electronica Kabbalist wannabe. (News flash, lady: women are prohibited from reading the Kabbalah, so, by definition, you can't be one!) Prince is the closest to what he was, but he just keeps re-treading the same ground over and over.

All pedphile jokes aside, "Thriller" is still a kickass album.

Janet's first two albums blew chunks. Then she took control (literally--that's the reason her third album is called that) and albums 3-5 were awesome. She had a couple of decent tracks on the sixth, which was a hits compilation. Everything since has been embarassingly bad when stacked up against Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, and janet. (It's like comparing Invincible to Thriller or Bad.)
