DENVER — John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate, two senior campaign officials told The Associated Press on Friday.

A formal announcement was expected within a few hours at a campaign rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, 44, is a self-styled hockey mom and political reformer who has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection was a stunning surprise, as McCain passed over many other better known prospects, some of whom had been the subject of intense speculation for weeks or months.

At 44, she is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well — and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

Palin is also way hotter than any of the other candidates and the only one that has not been violated by Bizarro The Grin.

A 44 self-styled hockey mom, oyes.

This is quite a baffling choice. It smacks of desperation -- "I've got to find a woman to run with me who can pick up the insane feminists who were supporting Obama, but is pro-life and comes with very little political baggage."

In any case, given that McCain is older than dirt's grandfather, choosing such a seemingly unqualified backup totally undermines the inexperience argument he's been using against Obama.

Not to mention that the Democrats now have two great speakers and debaters on the ticket, while McCain is not exactly a master at it, and he picked a running mate that Joe Biden will tear to shreds.

Also, they're already touting that she is the most popular governor in the country with her constituents (80% approval rating), while leaving out the fact that her state has a population of 23, and 22 of those people are Republicans.

I'm really not trying to make a political statement here, but this is really, really a strange choice. I would've gone with Romney were I McCain. He's well-known, popular, likeable, centrist (moreso than either McCain or Obama are in actuality, regardless of their claims), and a great speaker. I might not agree with him (especially on foreign policy), but he seems like he'd be a more complementary choice who would balance out McCain's shortcomings.

She has good relations with bears as evidenced by the lack of a bear uprisings in the state of Alaska. Did I mention that she is a 44 year old, self-styled hockey mom? If her skills in the sack are any indication, she has my 100% approval.

I'll withhold judgment until we hear from The Grip.

Or, if he's already on vacation, until we hear from Jeffrey Tambor.

She just sucks. (See further explanation elsewhere.) And she looks like a whore, too.

Based on photos like this, Vice-President MILF is more like it
And she looks like a VP you'd see in a Michael Bay movie.

Okay, that photo looks pretty yummy. She didn't look nearly that nice this morning during her speech.

How old is that pic? She doesn't look old enough to have a son in Iraq in that.

She seems like the typical Republican dream woman - she hunts, she's a member of the NRA, and she's dumb as a bag of shit! Wowza!

In a way, I kinda feel sorry for McCain. I think he knows that he ain't winning this election.

Wait, is that an actual picture of her? She looks nothing like that now. Either it's 15 years old or it's someone else.

She is not a friend of bears. She has lost my vote (not that she ever had it).

I think this is backfiring. My dad is a staunch Republican, though he agrees the deadlock in Washington is ridiculous. He likes Barack Obama, but was planning to vote McCain because he likes him as much and agrees more with him. However, I talked to him, and the choice of Palin immediately made him question McCain's judgment, and he now plans to vote Obama.

Her ridiculous level of inexperience reflects more on McCain's judgment than on her herself.

And now, a question from my apathetic political side:
Why are people saying she's inexperienced?
The only argument I've heard is because she is a Governor, which seems odd (and probably only a small part of it), because three of the last four Presidents were Governors before taking office.

It's because she hasn't been on the national scene very long at all, and before that, she worked in a town of 9,000. And when John McCain says that experience is the absolute most important thing ever, and then goes and picks Palin to be his VP, it undercuts that argument.

Her experience:
beauty queen
local sportscaster
housewife
city council (the population varies from report to report from 4,000 to 9,000 -- the 2000 census puts it around 5,000)
mayor
failed run for lieutenant governor
governor (with support from Ted Stevens until he became a pariah) for approximately 20 months

Add to that her own admission even two months ago that she wasn't sure who she was voting for, and her comment three weeks ago that she had no idea what a vice president does.
