uh, y'know, the sounds that sound good together... sometimes... and sometimes sounds like the disgusting "squish squish" sound Slicker's mom makes whenever she walks

Spin Magazine's Top 100 Albums '85-'05

Post by jjreason »

Okay, here's the first 25 starting from the bottom up. I'll update the post as they reveal more entries, not sure how regularly they're doing that. I've put ***********'s beside the entries that I have, be interesting to see which albums made it into the most of our collections.

Let it be known that I was a CD junkie from 91-95, that era comprises an enormous percentage of my collection. My university years were an absolute blast musicwise (as well as booze-wise, but that's another story).

*100. The Strokes, Is This It (RCA, 2001)
*99. Afghan Whigs, Gentlemen (Elektra, 1993)
98. Cornershop, When I Was Born for the 7th Time (Luaka Bop, 1997)
97. Neutral Milk Hotel, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (Merge, 1998)
96. The Pogues, Rum, Sodomy & the Lash (Stiff/WEA, 1985)
95. Elastica, Elastica (DGC, 1995)
94. Slint, Spiderland (Touch and Go, 1991)
*93. Pearl Jam, Ten (Epic, 1991)
92. Big Black, Atomizer (Homestead, 1986)
91. XTC, Skylarking (Geffen, 1986)
90. Sonic Youth, Sister (DGC, 1987)
89. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fever to Tell (Interscope, 2003)
88. Stereolab, Emperor Tomato Ketchup (Elektra, 1996)
*87. Blur, Parklife (Food, 1994)
86. Meat Puppets, Up on the Sun (SST, 1985)
85. R.E.M, Automatic for the People (Warner Bros., 1992)
*84. Soundgarden, Superunknown (A&M, 1994)
83. At the Drive-In, Relationship of Command (Grand Royal, 2000)
82. Jeff Buckley, Grace (Columbia 1994)
*81. Beck, Mellow Gold (Geffen, 1994)
80. D'Angelo, Voodoo (Virgin, 2000)
*79. Moby, Everything Is Wrong (Elektra, 1995)
*78. The Stone Roses, The Stone Roses (Silvertone, 1989)
77. Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (Nonesuch, 2002)
76. Belle and Sebastian, If You're Feeling Sinister (The Enclave, 1997)
75. Le Tigre, Le Tigre (Mr. Lady, 1999)

I don't put a lot of stock into such lists, but Ten is awfully low. Superunknown is way, way low. That album would easily make my top ten.

Fever to Tell is an incredible disappointment, a critic's darling that's practically unlistenable. Grace is another hugely overrated CD. I'm going to go with the assumption that most of the others I've never heard of fall in the same category.

And the ones I have:
Ten
Fever to Tell
Automatic for the People
Superunknown
Mellow Gold

For me, Soundgarden peaked with Badmotorfinger. Superunknown seemed a little "stoned" to me or something. Good record though. I don't have either Fever to Tell or Buckley's Grace.

Here are albums 74-50, I'm a little suprised that "Pinkerton" made it on the list whereas the immeasurably better "Blue Album" didn't. I noticed that later on with "White Blood Cells" and "Elephant".... it's like they want you to go and pick up the 2nd best albums or something......

*74 Portishead - Dummy
73 Pulp - Different Class
72 Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx
*71 Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
70 Jay-Z - the Blueprint
69 DJ Shadow - Entroducing DJ Shadow
68 Tricky - Maxinquaye
67 Slayer - Reign in Blood
*66 Outkast - Aquemini
65 Basement Jaxx - Remedy
*64 Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP
*63 Pavement - Crooked Rain Crooked Rain
62 Missy Elliott - Supa Dupa Fly
*61 Weezer - Pinkerton
*60 De La Soul - De La Soul is Dead
59 Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West
58 Metallica - Master of Puppets
57 White Stripes - White Blood Cells
*56 PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love
*55 Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole
*54 The Breeders - Last Splash
*53 Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of LA
*52 Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
*51 Nirvana - In Utero
50 New Order - Low Life

One good thing about this exercise is that is has made me look at my CDs and blow the dust off a few that need a good listen. I'm really guilty of not listening to enough music these days, and that's going to change (for a little while, anyhow).

and that's why i (and is would seem, anarky, as well...) don't put much stock in these types of lists. there's always an agenda... or they just think it's more "cool" to say the second best album, or the one that wasn't as profitable and memorable is better, because not as many people know it. but of course, then there's superunknown on there, and since that's the one that made soundgarden virtually a household name, i don't now where they're coming from with this list. maybe that's the idea... diversion tactics!

The ones I have:

66 Outkast - Aquemini

My assumption is "Speakerboxx/The Love Below" will rank much, much higher.

58 Metallica - Master of Puppets

Not my favorite Metallica, but probably not the last we've seen of them here, either.

57 White Stripes - White Blood Cells

Eh, Elephant's better.

54 The Breeders - Last Splash
53 Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of LA
52 Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
51 Nirvana - In Utero

These are all way underranked. Period.

And "historical significance" of Nevermind aside, In Utero pulverizes it. (And is, in turn, pulverized by Unplugged.)

And some comments on ones I don't have:

64 Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP

What. The. FUCK?

Is this a joke? This incompetent buffoon ranks higher than Superunknown? I can't rap at all, and I can do better than this turd. The only good think Eminem ever did was Brittany Murphy, and by the consumation of that act, she ceased to be good and fell into the same "would be hot if she weren't so damned disgusting" category as Angelina Jolie.

55 Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole

Feh. Techno crap. That videogame bullshit is the only form I don't recognize as being music. I'd rather crank up the Toby Keith than subject my ears to this, and I'd rather be Michael Clarke Duncan's bitch in prison for the rest of my life than listen to Toby Keith.

Techno, electronica, retarded kid playing with a synthesizer. It's all the same, and it all sucks. (Well, maybe except for the "Mortal Kombat" theme.)

Wow, what a horrid list.

Ten, Super Unknown, Liscensed to Ill, In Utero, and many others rank way way way way way to low. Mellow Gold is another good album. I bet ya number one will be the bodyguard soundtrack, what a fuckin crock. Rolling stone would have made a better list. How about Billboard?

I really hope "Pinkerton" isn't Weezer's only entry. I'm a huge Weezer geek so of course I like it. But for my money, I'd take "Blue" or "Maladroit".

Believe it or not, there are NO MORE entries for Weezer or Metallica. Outkast is on there again..... but it ain't Speakerboxxx/Love Below. I might as well continue on.......

I won't defend their choices, but it sure seems to me that they're picking albums that "pushed" in some way. "Nevermind" changed radio for 10 years, "In Utero" built on that. "Ten" was the first great "grunge" album to follow "Nevermind", but radio was ready for it because of what Nirvana had accomplished. Maybe?

I found the top of the list a little hip hop heavy, but hip hop was a whole movement. It has influenced millions of people, much like Rock and Roll did in the 50s. Some of the records that kicked that off are very deserving of attention.

Here are the next 25, since we seem to have had a go at the last set.

*49 Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
*48 Radiohead - Kid A
*47 Eric B and Rakim - Follow The Leader
46 The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace
45 Kanye West - College Dropout
44 Green Day - Dookie
43 Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded
*42 Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
*41 Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
*40 Run DMC - Raising Hell
39 Lucinda Williams - (self titled)
*38 A Tribe Called Qwest - The Low End Theory
*37 Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand
*36 Pixies - Doolittle
35 Dr. Dre - The Chronic
34 Elliott Smith - Either/Or
33 Ice Cube - AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted
32 The Replacements - Tim
31 Dinosaur Jr. - You're Lying All Over Me
30 Notorious BIG - Ready to Die
29 Fugazi - Thirteen Songs
*28 Oasis - Definitely Maybe
27 The Cure - The Head on the Door
*26 Bjork - Post

I was happy Dinosaur Jr. got on the list. I have 4 albums of their music, but none with Lou Barlow on bass. Lou Barlow's band Sebadoh put out a record called "Bake Sale" back when I was in university that is so beautiful and sad, I can't believe it's not here. The follow up "Harmacy" had some really beautiful moments as well. I think by adding this Dino Jr disc, they kick the props to Barlow as well as the force behind the band that continued on after he left, J. Mascis.

I have/had at least 6 albums from 49-26. Pumpkins, Green Day, Janes Addiction, Erk B, Radiohead, Tribe, and RUN DMC. Those are some good assed albums. Dino Jr. I have heard and is good. Lauryn Hill however is shit as well as some others on here. Cant wait to see the next batch

I'll hold off for a couple of days here, Kid. The list is up at Spin.com I'm sure (as the mag is out now) if you want a sneak preview.

I was surprised the Lauryn Hill record got on there instead of "the Score" by Fugees (oops, I guess I spoilered the top 25 there), which to me was much better. The Lauryn Hill record might be responsible for the conception of my son however, so I feel a certain connection to it that way..... :D :D :D

49 Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

This is about in the right spot. Not too high, as some lists put it, but it definitely is a cool album.

48 Radiohead - Kid A

Bunch of sonic experimental trash. Here's hoping The Bends or OK Computer or one of their other albums of actual songs places higher.

44 Green Day - Dookie
41 Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

Probably their best album and, again, in an appropriate slot. On both counts. (I suspect Mellon Collie and American Idiot are both still to come, though.)

40 Run DMC - Raising Hell

Hayle yeah!! This one rocks. "You Be Illing" is a high point in western culture.

39 Lucinda Williams - (self titled)

A great album I'd not even know about had Tom Petty not covered "Change the Locks." Thanks, Tom.
(Speaking of which, Full Moon Fever had better be on this list!)

35 Dr. Dre - The Chronic

One of the best rap albums ever. This one may be a little low.

30 Notorious BIG - Ready to Die

Feh. Not bad, but I've never seen the big deal. Like Tupac, Selina, and Kurt, were he alive today he'd be the star of the next Surreal Life.

And again, thoughts on some of the others.

45 Kanye West - College Dropout

This guy's a bozo. And pretty talentless. I don't see the appeal.

42 Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking

I always found them a tad overrated. Not bad, but no second coming, either. RHCP are better. So's Porno for Pyros, oddly enough.

Ritual de lo Habitual's a better album.

38 A Tribe Called Qwest - The Low End Theory
36 Pixies - Doolittle

Have heard, but don't have, and it's been a while. I recall them both being excellent albums.

34 Elliott Smith - Either/Or
32 The Replacements - Tim
31 Dinosaur Jr. - You're Lying All Over Me
29 Fugazi - Thirteen Songs

Always heard these guys were good, but never actually listened to them.

28 Oasis - Definitely Maybe

I always hated Oasis on the basis of their being a bunch of pompous loons. But recently a friend made me a mix CD of their recent stuff, and they're actually pretty good.

26 Bjork - Post

Is this the one with the song, the video for which she gets eaten by a bear? If so, then fuck yeah! You know what I think about bears!!

Reasons like this is why I put such little care or faith into these lists. They're good for debate such as this but little else. I don't care who you are, you can not tell me that Kanye fucking West is 'better' than Weezer and that "Pinkerton" is 'better' than "Blue", "Green", and "Maladroit". An awesome album? Fuck yes! Better than the other three? Fuck no!

A few albums that I havent seen that better be in the top 25:

The Joshua Tree - U2
Thorwing Copper - Live(although I like Secret Samadhi Better)
The Bends - Radiohead

SOme of my favorites from this time period that probably wont make the list:

Division BEll, Momentary Lapse of Reason - Floyd
Wildflowers - Tom Petty
Vs - Pearl Jam
Mental Jewelry - Live
Jar of Flies - Alice in Chains

Jar of Flies is wicked, probably the best thing Alice in Chains did that I ever heard. Toned down, but by no means "soft".

U2 is on there, but not Joshua Tree - again, it's the "pick the NOT the best album" theme, just to make people argue about the list.

Tom Petty........ ain't on there anywhere. It's SPIN, not Rolling Stone, SPIN wouldn't go near Tom Petty - too "classic rock" - same as Springsteen. Any normal person into a variety of music would have some elements of this type of thing on their list (for me it would be "The Rising", as well as "Full Moon Fever", and at least one Neil Young album from the last 20 years). SPIN ain't got none.
