There was actually ALOT of good music in that time span (the earlier you go, the better it gets). When I think of mid-90's music,I automatically think of Alice in Chains for some reason, who continue to be one of my favs. Then I go to all of the sorta one-hit wonder types that made some awesome songs only to disappear (i.e. Mazzy Star, Better than Ezra, Fastball). I think that 1999 is one of the WORST YEARS EVER in music history. It was nothing but shitty boy bands (Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC), shitty rap-rock (KORN, Limp Bizkit), shitty Christina, shitty Britney and their shitty clones(Jessica Simpson, etc.).

Most of the music of the 90s was great up until the last couple of years.
I know I'll draw some serious flak for this, but even Hanson put out some good stuff. (Check out the song "This Time Around." It sounds more Black Crowes than that stupid Mmmm-Bop horseshit.)
Gwen Stefani sucks and should be put out of her misery, unless she rejoins No Doubt and closes the door forever on the "Mmm hmm, this song's shit" phase of her life.

NO DOUBT is excellent..... how is it that Gwen Stefani's solo stuff can be SO BAD?????
Every era has it's faults, but style over substance was absolutely the way of the world in the late 90s. 98 degrees anyone? MTV specifically (and I won't leave MuchMusic out of the circle of blame) have made it damned near impossible for anyone normal looking to have a great career in music.
If videos were king back in the 60's and 70's, would ugly fuckers like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Tom Petty, et al ever had a chance to shine? My God, we'd be without most of the classics. Fuck videos.

I'm trying to think of the great singers from prior to the 70s or so who weren't ass-fugly. I guess Robert Johnson and Elvis Presely are probably the closest to handsome fellows. But if Muddy, The Wolf, Bo Diddley, Cash, Willie, etc, had to rely on videos, we would not have rock music today.
Wanna hear something embarassing? That first single Gwen put out before her album hit shelves ("What You Waiting For") was pretty decent, sort of in the poppier No Doubt vein. So I picked up the album when it came out. I've bought some real fucking turds in my time, and I have this weird thing about getting rid of CDs so I still have space wasted by such gems as Lucaccentric and Mister Bungle, but this is the worst album I've ever owned. I thought long and hard about driving to her house and kicking Gavin's balls repeatedly for letting his wife embarassing herself like this.

My dear Anarky (if I must deign to call you by what is so obviously a psuedonym), would you not agree that our beloved Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was one of the most handsome men to ever don a powdered wig? Why, I'll have you know that in his day, all the strumpets swooned over his trampish good looks and devilish charms.
Returning to the topic at hand, I do not believe that what is called "music" today deserves that moniker. From the brutish imbecility of so called "rock and roll" to the repetitive tripe of "rap" and to the supposedly classical refuse by talentless racounteurs such as John Williams and his ilk, there has been no true music composed since the day of Igor Stravinsky. While I myself feel that Stravinsky was a mere troglodyte, his noise can at least be construed as music. Modern "music" does nothing more than instill in me a strong urge to move my bowels.
This, of course, applies double to the Spice Girls, who are neither spicy nor girls.

In the 90's, if it wasn't grunge, it was shit.
And it still is shit.
And it will always be shit.
Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP, Alice in Chains, and PJ - now that was good 90's rock.
