Bryan Singer: Why the hate?

I'm really baffled by this, as it goes way beyond the "geeks hate everything" cliche.
If Singer's name comes up on the internet, there are immediately seven thousand responses that go on and on about how horrible he is, how he's such an awful director, how his movies all suck, how his X-Men movies sucked in particular. Uwe Boll doesn't get as much hate as Singer does.
What the fuck is the deal? Yeah, some people (granted, a lot) were disappointed by Superman Returns. How the hell does making one movie you didn't like (and even if you didn't like it, it's tough to argue that Superman Returns is objectively a bad film) override everything else the guy's done?
And how the fuck did fandom go from thinking correctly that the first two X-Men movies were two of the best comic book superhero movies to thinking they're awful piles of crap? Rogue was a few years younger. Big fucking deal.
I haven't seen every single movie he did. But Apt Pupil, The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie? You're going to argue that a guy is a talentless hack the likes of which Michael Bay only dreams of being, when he made those three movies--in addition to the only two X-Men movies that were truly worthy of the name (and writing and producing the only other one that's even watchable)? It's not like he's M. Knight Shamalamadingdong, starting strong and burning out almost immediately.
I dunno. This is a lot of "ink" for this rant, but I can't fathom it. It goes well beyond normal nerd rage and is largely unjustified.
